Flushing and curing are two important activities in the process of growing cannabis. While flushing is necessary to smoothen and make cannabis easy to inhale when vapourized, curing on the other hand is important to fully develop the flavours and aromas of a specific variety. Although these two processes are time consuming (which is why most producers/growers overlook it), they should however not be taken lightly and those who grow on their own would be doing themselves great favours flushing and curing their plants.

Flushing removes any residual plant nutrients from the cannabis before it is harvested. Regardless of the type of plant nutrients used, it’s exceedingly important to flush the plants to create a smooth flavourful inhale.

When Cannabis isn’t properly flushed, the final product can be harsh and may even cause a burning sensation in the throat of the user. The aromas and flavours could be impacted because the nutrients are still present. When improperly flushed, the residual ash is dark and almost charcoal looking when smoked where properly flushed Cannabis produces a greyish to white colour when smoked.

Many people wrongly believe a smooth inhale comes from organic nutrients, however, these nutrients also need to be flushed from the plant before harvesting. The flush process is the biggest factor in creating an enjoyable cough free product.

While the Cannabis plant is exceedingly aromatic during the growing process, these flavours and aromas aren’t fully developed until after it is dried. In fact, if the harvested Cannabis flowers are not properly cured, these aromas and flavours will diminish or disappear completely from the final product. Worse, a poorly cured Cannabis product may develop a fresh cut grass smell or taste.

Curing is a process in which will slowly remove moisture from the harvested Cannabis flowers. The focus is on proper airflow along with humidity and temperature control during this process. After all, it is the curing process that will lock in Cannabis potency, flavours and aromas.

Properly cured Cannabis is a time consuming process, but an exceedingly important one because improperly cured Cannabis may result in mildew or mould. Improperly cured Cannabis will often times cause an overwhelming amount of coughing.

When done exceptionally well, the Cannabis curing process may increase Cannabis potency because by properly curing Cannabis there’s an opportunity for Cannabinoids such as THCA to become THC.

Properly cured Cannabis ensures the terpene and flavonoid profiles are fully developed. These smells and tastes are important parts of the entourage effect (which will be discussed in subsequent posts on this platform).

Therefore, flushing and curing are important processes in getting the best out of the grown cannabis plant.
